S'émerveiller
Bled Contemporary Music Week
Program Notes
S'émerveiller was not so much composed as it found its way to me. The flourishes were like sand seeping through my fingers onto the keyboard, then onto the page. These piano gestures led me through a discovery of a wondrous, mysterious landscape already held by the strings.
The music moves through a shifting terrain of awe and unease, moments of suspended calm giving way to restless surges. It pauses for an intimate cadenza where the piano flows like streams, the strings call like birds and patter like rain. From there, the music gathers momentum, rushing toward the finish in cascading glissandos.
S'émerveiller is a reflexive verb suggesting that wonder arises within. I chose this title to reflect how this piece came into being, and to invite that inward stirring to arise again within the listener.
